Miso Curry Milk Ramen Ajino Sapporo Oonishi in Aomori 味の札幌大西

Aomori

Aomori is the largest city in the northernmost part of Honshu and the capital of Aomori prefecture (Japan’s nr. 1 prefecture for apple production). With a Shinkansen connection at Shin-Aomori it works as an ideal base for visiting the many interesting sights in the area.

Ajino Sapporo Oonishi

Aomori is home to Miso Curry Milk Ramen, invented by Mr. Oonishi in the 197o’s. The Sapporo in the shop name refers to the fact that the owner moved his restaurant from Sapporo to Aomori to promote his new ramen blend. Featured on Japanese TV, the place became famous with locals, which sometimes results in longer waiting cues, but if you visit outside rush hours there is no waiting at all.

The small ramen joint is obviously not refurbished since its opening, but with a wooden interior, a few counter places and sitting options, it still gives you a warm cosy feeling. It’s located just minutes by foot from Aomori Station, not far from the fish market.

Miso Curry Milk Ramen

Ajino Sapporo Oonishi became primarily famous for its original miso curry milk ramen. The soup is made with a broth of pork and chicken bones. The miso base combines with curry and milk, providing a smooth & savory blend. The creaminess is accentuated with a small knob of butter topped on top of the bowl. The standard toppings include bamboo shoots, seaweed, roast chashū pork and bean sprouts. The egg-yellow noodles are thick and curly.
