Cape Ashizuri: Shikoku’s southern tip
足摺岬
A short coastal walk past a lighthouse, temple and dramatic Pacific cliffs at Shikoku’s southern tip.
Exploring Cape Ashizuri
Cape Ashizuri marks the southernmost point of Shikoku. A roughly 2 km walking route connects its main sights, including the lighthouse, several viewpoints and Kongofuku-ji, temple 38 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
The cape forms part of Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Its steep cliffs, subtropical vegetation and uninterrupted Pacific views make the walk worthwhile, even though the route itself is relatively short.
Walking around Cape Ashizuri
We walked to the cape from our hotel The Mana Village in about 30 minutes. The route followed the coast past small settlements, beaches and rocky viewpoints before joining the main walking trail around the cape.
The 2 km trail connects the observation points, lighthouse, Kongofuku-ji Temple and several places associated with the “Seven Wonders of Ashizuri.” We also visited Hakusan Domon, a granite sea arch measuring approximately 16 metres high and 17 metres wide. Reaching it involves a steep flight of steps, but it can also be viewed from the nearby Manjirō footbath.
Other places nearby
Continue along the coast to Tatsukushi Marine Park and the Minokoshi Coast, known for unusual rock formations, clear water and glass-bottom boat trips.
We did not have time to explore the nearby Matsuo area, where you can visit the Tojindaba rock formations, the Akō strangler fig and the granite coastline at Usubae.
