Gingado 1890

Officially 銀河堂1890 Sweets & Bakery, this shop bakes with Iwate ingredients — local "Yukichikara" wheat and salt from Noda — reflecting a commitment to showcasing the prefecture's harvest. The name has a story: "1890" marks the year Morioka Station first opened, and "Ginga" (galaxy) nods to the idea of carrying Iwate's rich harvest and the care of its producers out into the world, like the Milky Way connecting sky and earth.

The shop turns out sandwiches, fine pastries and baked bread, including a well-known collaboration loaf with Fukuda Pan, Morioka's beloved local bread institution. Prices run a touch higher than average, but the quality justifies it. A must-try: the apple & cinnamon pie (290 yen).

Location

Gingado 1890 sits inside Morioka Station, in the basement level of the Fesan station building — easy to duck into while waiting for a train or making a connection. There's a small eating space if you'd rather enjoy your pastry on the spot, and the bakery stays open into the evening, later than most station shops.
