Japanese Inn Anjuann in Nakamura
なごみ宿安住庵
A quiet hilltop ryokan for the Shimanto River and Cape Ashizuri route
Setting
Anjuann is a small, family-run inn on a hill above Nakamura, a useful base for the Shimanto River area in western Kochi. The rooms look out over the town, the river, and the surrounding hills, and the atmosphere is calm and personal, with a warm owner who made the stay feel very easy.
Rooms
The rooms are traditional Japanese-style, simple, comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed. The best part is the light and the view over Nakamura, especially after a day outside along the Shimanto River.
Onsen
The bath is small but pleasant, with an outdoor rotenburo set among greenery and open views toward the hills.
Food
Dinner was served kaiseki style and was better than we expected: careful, local-feeling dishes with craft beer and local sake available. Breakfast continued in the same quiet, generous style.
Activity
Right next to the inn are Nakamura City Park and Nakamura Castle, now a local history museum. We walked there before dinner; in cherry blossom season the park was busy with local families picnicking and barbecuing under the trees.
Practical Info
We stayed here as a calm overnight stop between Kochi and Cape Ashizuri. The next morning we made our walk along the Shimanto River and the chinkabashi bridges, so the inn worked well as a base for combining Nakamura, the river valley, and the Ashizuri coast.
