Supermarket ready-made meals in Japan

A warm lunch or early supper beyond the combini

Published

Beyond restaurant opening hours

Restaurants in Japan often close between 14:00 and 17:00, and in smaller towns or rural areas, your options narrow quickly — no nearby combini, no roadside Michi no Eki, and the last lunch orders already called at 13:30. Supermarkets fill that gap reliably.

The supermarket as a meal stop

Most Japanese supermarkets carry a substantial ready-made section: packaged single portions of rice dishes, noodles, tempura, grilled fish, salads, and more. Many stores also have a small bakery counter. Prices are modest — typically ¥300–¥700 for a main — and the range is noticeably wider than what you'll find in a combini.

Practical extras make this even easier: seating areas with tables and chairs are common, and many supermarkets provide microwaves so you can warm your meal on the spot. Hours tend to run from early morning until 21:00 or later, seven days a week.
