Kumo no Ueno Hotel Annex in Yusuhara

雲の上のホテル 別館

Kumo no Ueno Hotel Annex in Yusuhara is a Kengo Kuma-designed hotel above the town market, useful for the Shikoku Karst, nearby hikes, and a short stay in Kochi's mountains.

Staying at Kumo no Ueno Hotel Annex in Yusuhara

Kumo no Ueno Hotel Annex is a Kengo Kuma-designed hotel in Yusuhara, a small mountain town in Kochi Prefecture. It works well as a base for the Shikoku Karst and nearby walks, especially if you want to stay somewhere central rather than drive in and out for the day.

The hotel sits above Machi-no-Eki Yusuhara, a compact market selling local food and regional products. There are several places in town for dinner, so you do not need to include dinner in your room rate.

If you have time before sunset, the small park above town is an easy walk and gives a good view over Yusuhara.

The hotel and market building

The building is part hotel, part town market. Guest rooms are upstairs, while the ground floor is used by both visitors and locals, which keeps the place from feeling like a standalone tourist hotel.

Outside, the thatched cladding is the detail that stands out first. Inside, the design is simple and timber-heavy, in line with Kuma's other buildings around Yusuhara.

Breakfast

Breakfast is Japanese-style and straightforward, with enough food for an early start before hiking or driving further into the mountains.

Rooms

Our room was Japanese-style. Twin rooms are available, but they were fully booked when we reserved, so it is worth booking early if you prefer beds.

The room itself was simple, clean, and well equipped rather than luxurious. We stayed for two nights, and the rate for two people including breakfast was 18,780 yen.

Using the Kumo no Ue onsen

The hotel's associated onsen is about 2 km away. A free shuttle runs regularly, though you can also drive there yourself. Ask reception for enough coupons for each visit during your stay.

The onsen is useful after a day of hiking, and the building is another stop on Yusuhara's Kengo Kuma route. For more details, read the separate post about the Kumo no Ueno Hot Spring.

Overall, Kumo no Ueno Hotel Annex is a practical choice if your trip already brings you to Yusuhara. It is not a resort-style stay, but it is central, reasonably priced, and closely connected to the town around it.
