Nakatsukeikoku Yunomori 中津渓谷 ゆの森

Accommodation

This inn offers a stunning view of the Nakatsu River and features just four rooms in the main building. While there are two cottages a bit further up, staying in the ryokan itself is convenient, with the restaurants and onsen just one floor away. The inn captures the essence of a traditional Japanese inn, with its nostalgic charm and well-maintained, older interior.

In the lobby, guests can relax in beautiful seating areas overlooking the river and browse a small shop offering local products. Although the staff primarily speak Japanese, they are hospitable and kind.

Onsen

Yunomori is one of the few inns in the area to have an open-air bath. While day trips are possible, staying at least one night is recommended to fully enjoy the experience. The onsen also features a small sauna and a cold water pool, which we found surprisingly enjoyable and added to the relaxing experience.

The women’s area is more enclosed, limiting views of the surrounding greenery, but outdoor relaxation is still possible.

Rooms

The four Japanese-style rooms each offer a nice view of the river and include a table and two chairs. Guests are provided with tea and sweets daily, ensuring a peaceful and quiet stay.

Dining

During our stay, we chose to have breakfast only, aware that we could dine à la carte at the on-site restaurant. While set meals are an option, we preferred simpler choices. However, there were no issues with ordering drinks or desserts, which were quite tasty.

Note: If you’ve opted for a room with breakfast but still wish to dine at the restaurant for dinner, you’ll need to inform the staff of your meal preferences two hours beforehand and choose from the menu.

Breakfast

Breakfast is a set meal consisting of local fish, soup, rice, and vegetables, accompanied by coffee and dessert, which was a plus.

Practical info

Rooms can be reserved through the inn’s website.

We used Yunomori as our base for exploring Nakatsu Gorge and Yasui Gorge. For a delightful tea or matcha experience, we recommend visiting Tea Cafe Asunaro, located just 5km from Yunomori.

We last visited in April 5th 2024.
