Hachinohe Section of Michinoku Coastal Trail
みちのく潮風トレイル
Day hike along the gentle shores of the Hachinohe section of the Michinoku Coastal Trail
Hike from Same station to Okuki station
The Michinoku Coastal Trail officially begins at Kabushima Shrine 蕪島神社 on the Hachinohe coast, and this section is the easiest possible introduction to it. During weekends it can get quite busy with locals, but most people are only out for a short walk or have come by car to picnic at the Tanesashi Kaigan Camping Ground 種差海岸キャンプ場. The scenery, colours and rock formations are splendid. We walked the roughly 11 km stretch from Same Station 鮫駅 to Okuki Station 大久喜駅 — a flat, easy 3 to 4 hour walk along the grassy lawns and rocky coastline of Tanesashi Kaigan — then took the train back to Hachinohe.
Partway along the trail, a small wooden fishing boat named Hamamaru No.1 浜丸壱號 sits propped up on trestles just off the path. Painted on its hull is “2011.3.11 大津波生き残り舟” — “the boat that survived the great tsunami” — left here as a quiet memorial to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck this coast, the same disaster the Michinoku Coastal Trail itself was built to help the region recover from.
In the afternoon, trains leave only every two hours, so plan your return trip accordingly. While waiting, we picnicked a bit further down the road, overlooking the sea. For the night we stayed at one of our favourite hotel brands, the Hon Hachinohe Dormy Inn Hotel.
