The two outdoor baths at Tamatebako Onsen

The open wide sea view is the defining feature of Tamatebako Onsen. There are 2 outdoor baths, men and women. In the Japanese-style bath, the large outdoor pool sits above the coast with Mount Kaimondake rising beyond the East China Sea. The Western-style bath looks towards Takeyama, the rock formation nicknamed “Snoopy Mountain.”

We came after climbing Mount Kaimondake, and the onsen worked as a simple end to a day around southern Ibusuki. Seeing the same volcanic cone from the water after standing on its summit made the two stops feel connected.

2025 renovation

Official Kagoshima tourism information says the renovation introduced a new spring source with a higher flow and blue-coloured water. It also lists a facial steam feature, a café and a terrace among the reopened facilities.

Sand baths in Ibusuki

Ibusuki is known for hot sand baths, where attendants bury you in naturally heated sand for a short session. We tried one during the same trip; the heat and weight of the sand were unusual, but for us it was less memorable than the open-air bath. If choosing only one, Tamatebako was our pick in 2020.
